Michigan Law Basics Policies

Michigan Law Basics is an online training program covering Michigan-specific practice areas and is required for admission to the State Bar of Michigan. Anyone seeking admission to practice law in Michigan (all Michigan bar applicants) is required to complete Michigan Law Basics.

Eligibility for Michigan Law Basics

Only those who have graduated from law school, are in the process for applying for admission to practice law in Michigan and have received an NCBE number (issued by the National Conference of Bar Examiners as part the application process) may register to take Michigan Law Basics.

Timing for taking Michigan Law Basics

Anyone who is eligible to take Michigan Law Basics may register for and complete the training at any time during their application process. The training must be completed to finalize an admission application.

Timing to access Michigan Law Basics

Immediately after registering for Michigan Law Basics, the registrant will receive an email with their user name and password so they can access the training.

Time limit to complete Michigan Law Basics

The Board of Law Examiners has set a 60-day time limit for completion of Michigan Law Basics. Accordingly, access is valid for 60 days from the date of registration.

If, for any reason, a registrant does not complete the training within that time period, they must register and pay again and re-take the entire Michigan Law Basics training.

Completion requirements

To complete Michigan Law Basics, a registrant must complete all lessons (read all written material and watch all videos) and correctly answer all hurdle questions. They also must follow the steps included in the training to receive the certificate of completion that must be submitted as part of the admissions process.

Timing for receipt of certification of completion

A certificate of completion is generated immediately when someone completes Michigan Law Basics. The training software will generate a certificate of completion. The registrant must download this certificate as soon as they complete the training. They will need to submit this certificate to the BLE as part of the admissions process by emailing this certificate to mlccomponent@courts.mi.gov.

How long is the certificate of completion valid?

The Board of Law Examiners allows an individual to use the Michigan Law Basics certificate of completion for three years from the date of completion. If the person is not admitted within three years of completing the training and wants to continue to seek admission to practice they are required to register, pay and take Michigan Law Basics once again.

Payment

Full payment is due at registration and is nonrefundable and nontransferable

Registration cancellation

Anyone who has registered for Michigan Law Basics may cancel their registration, but payment is non-refundable.

There is no Partnership discount for Michigan Law Basics.

Can law firms or companies pay for their law clerks or employees to take Michigan Law Basics?

No, the registration process is individual and only allows individuals who are seeking admission to practice law in Michigan to pay. A firm or company may reimburse an individual or directly provide a firm/business credit card to the individual to use when registering.

Purchase online at www.icle.org/michiganlawbasics. You will be asked to read and attest to the user agreement. We suggest you print a copy for your records. You will be able to access Michigan Law Basics immediately by using the ICLE username and password that will be emailed to you as soon as you complete your registration.
